BioShock Infinite for Mac OS X
|
If you put much stock in Metacritic, Bioshock Infinite is the best computer games (or at least the best reviews) in 2013. Set
in Columbia, a sprawling city of steampunk floating in the clouds, it
is at once a stunning achievement in the construction of the world; a science fiction story of the migration of the memorable characters; ultraviolent shoot-'em-up a man's thoughts; and a criticism not of the plotting of legend and reality of America at the dawn of the 20th century. And
this Thursday, five months after its release on other platforms, it
came on a Mac (perhaps through Sky-Hook and with blazing guns).
The
premise of cannot simplicity, at least initially: established in 1912,
it sends a private investigator named Booker DeWitt on a trip to
Columbia to find and rescue a young woman named Elizabeth, who was
holding her up in a tower for her entire life. Elizabeth,
it turns out, has the power to manipulate reality by opening the tears
in the structure of space and time, and while his ability means that the
plot has some bizarre turns after that, she and Booker is only part of
the story.
Infinite also introduced several initiatives of its own, especially the Sky-Lines-high speed glide song-like dimly in the landscape and could be riding using a device mounted on the arm is called a Sky Hook (which doubles as a particularly gruesome close quarter weapon)-extradimensional ghost objects and, such as weapons, the ally of the robot, and a bit of strategic terrain, that Elizabeth may finally convened a reality. And then of course there is Elizabeth, a constant presence throughout the most glamorous of games have never been this way, and those who repeatedly find money, health packs, and other useful items, usually only when you need them most.
The
actual Center here is Columbia itself-a sparkling look,
retro-futuristic utopias that is quickly Peel the mask like a rotten,
the dictatorship of racism is built on little more than zealously
warlike chauvin and labor of the working class to keep in condition as
slaves. Where earlier Bioshocks brought us to the
Rapture, the consequences of a failed experiment, the Columbia is a
powder keg of cheating to blow-and Elizabeth just may be the match that
lit it.
Columbia
and the story unfolds in the inside it is fascinating, but the action
of the Infinite is no slouch--and when you're not scrounging for
ammunition, cash, and other hidden features in each litter bins and
boxes you see, it offers many opportunities to trade shots with police
and soldiers. As Bioshocks earlier, Infinite lets
you wreak havoc with many types of lilies and exotic superpower (here
called Vigors instead of plasmids) can open up the the Raven angry,
explosive fireballs, green phantoms that enemy forces to fight for you,
and much more.
Bioshock Infinite is also really, really bloody, so more sensitive players should consider themselves forewarned.
However, fought the Infinite feels like a step back from previous Bioshocks. Rather
than being able to build an arsenal of exotic, unique weapons, players
are limited to two guns pretty standard at a time, and upgrade them only
cows onto their existing capabilities, rather than adding new ones. And
while experimenting with the Vigors is always fun at first, they are
expensive, and their effects are similar enough that eventually you will
find yourself falling back on one or two familiar abilities instead of
using the entire spectrum.
Therefore, the action of the Infinite is extremely attractive, as is a mix of
crazy violence against peaceful stroll through the streets of Columbia
(something first Bioshocks never offered). And all performed beautifully on Macs; 2012
new Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Air 2009 and 2013, we use as test machines
to run games smoothly on superior image settings (although the first two
had some screen tearing and sometimes lose frames in the gunfight). Also,
people like to play shooting game in the style of their console will be
happy to know that support for the 360 and the PS3 controller is built
into the game (although the usual Mac friendly pieces such as Logitech's
dual action would not work without the need for third party software , strangely).
While
it has its share of persistent problems, Bioshock Infinite still stands
as one of the best games of the year, on a Mac or any other platform.
